There are seven “I AM” statements in the Gospel of John.
Seven times Jesus tells us exactly who He is. Not metaphors. Not suggestions.
Seven declarations—leaving no room for misunderstanding—that reveal Jesus as God.

“I am the bread of life” (John 6:35, 48, 51)
After Jesus fed the 5000, many came back for more free food. They were concerned with the needs of the day, but Jesus offers eternal satisfaction.
Jesus says He is essential to life. He is not like bread, He is the bread of life. We die without Him. Our only solution is accepting Jesus, who truly satisfies.
Is Jesus essential to your life?

“I am the light of the world” (John 8:12; 9:5)
The Pharisees disputed what Jesus declared. They were like blind men saying the sun isn’t shining.
But the question is not whether the light is shining; Jesus is the light of the world. The real question is:
Are you following Jesus or walking in darkness?

“I am the door” (John 10:7, 9)
Jesus spoke about leaders, teaching that there are two kinds who enter a sheepfold (spiritual community). Those who enter through Jesus alone, and those who do not – who are like thieves and robbers.
As leaders, why do we shepherd? Is our entry into ministry, service and leadership fuelled by Jesus? And as followers, who are we allowing to lead us?

“I am the good shepherd” (John 10:11, 14)
As opposed to bad shepherds, who end up stealing, killing and destroying, Jesus is the Good Shepherd.
We call Him good because He cares for us, He died for us and He knows us by name.
Do you hear Jesus’ voice in your life? Who is the shepherd of your life?

“I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25)
Jesus did not say He knows about resurrection. He did not say He is one of the ways to resurrection. Jesus said He is the resurrection and the life. Without Jesus, death has the final word.
What you believe about resurrection determines whether you will receive it. If Jesus is only a teacher about eternal life to you – then you will only learn about it.
Receive Jesus. Receive eternal life.

“I am the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6)
In a world that encourages each person to go their own way, where truth has become subjective and often muddied, and where living is arbitrarily valued by social markers – Jesus’ words ring out clearly against the noise.
- He is the way — there is no other way to God.
- He is the truth — not one truth among many.
- He is the life — having defeated death itself.
Are you following Jesus? Is His truth your highest value? Those answers determine whether we live or die.

“I am the vine” (John 15:1-5)
Jesus says that He is the true vine, and that we can do nothing apart from Him.
Jesus did not say it would be good or helpful if you connected to the vine every now and then. He said you must remain in the vine and abide in Him. Anything else, and we risk being cut off by the Gardener.
We can look devoted and seem successful, but be spiritually barren. We have to remain in Jesus.
Are we abiding in Jesus? Is your life characterised by a consistent and growing pattern of obedience, holy love and faith?
This is who Jesus is.
When we take Him at His word, He transforms our lives.
May the Holy Spirit fill you with faith to trust in Him.
May the Father’s unchanging character anchor you in hope.
And may the love of Jesus keep you, causing you to bear fruit.
