“Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!”
The religious leaders could not believe that Jesus – who was “not yet fifty years old” – had seen Abraham and knew he would rejoice at Jesus’ coming.
These words “I am” go back to God’s reply to Moses, when the latter asked for His name.
In saying “I am”, Jesus made a clear claim to His divinity as God – an astounding declaration that was met with murderous rage.
The religious leaders were bound by time, thinking in human terms and standards. Jesus stands outside of time as the Son of God. He was, He is, and He is to come.
Give Jesus praise for who He is today!
