“As he taught, Jesus said, “Watch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honour at banquets. They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.””
The teachers of the law Jesus spoke about in Mark 12:38-40 were entrusted with preserving, studying and teaching God’s laws and commands to their community.
They should have been people who were walking righteously and closely with God, but Jesus said to beware of them and pointed out their showy, hollow spirituality — a façade of holiness designed to maintain their status, privileges and to garner man’s praise.
What would Jesus say about your faith? Are you devoted to Him or simply following after culture and tradition? Is who you are at church who you are at home — or are you just performing religion?
Ask God to keep you honest so your walk with Him doesn’t descend into hypocrisy and become something that’s “for a show”.
