Culture is not neutral.

It represents the ideas and behaviour of a particular group of people or society; culture is formed by the people who propagate it. If we have a belief about something, it invariably excludes things contrary to that belief.

Time seems to show us that what’s good or bad changes – one generation seems to have a different view from the next. But it’s only our perception of what’s good or bad that changes when we make truth relative to what’s happening in the world.

In this day and age, our beliefs are being shaped largely through digital means. We now have access to more voices – but our own voices matter too. It has become more important to have greater clarity about our personal beliefs.

We now have access to more voices – but our own voices matter too.

When we default to what is safe or popular, that inactivates gumption – the ability to decide what is the best thing to do in a particular situation, and to do it with energy and determination.

For we know that culture doesn’t just reflect values and beliefs – it also shapes values and beliefs. What we accept to be true goes on to shape the principles and convictions that we live by.

“For many people of faith, it’s becoming harder to live their convictions outside of their religious communities,” says David Kinnaman and Gabe Lyons in their book, Good Faith.

How do we find wisdom to steer without compromise through unfamiliar territories? And how can we prepare ourselves to build and shape culture based on truth and love?

The following pointers and testimony were shared by a youth in the marketplace who has been convicted to make a stand on issues such as building a more inclusive youth culture, safeguarding media content and respecting the sanctity of life.

KNOW YOUR STUFF

Be informed in the areas that you feel passionate about, or topics that stir your spirit. There are no topics too insignificant as God created all things. Read about them from different perspectives to understand what people think, but also seek biblical truth in those areas.

“For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” (Proverbs 2:6)

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” (James 1:5)

WALK IN COMMUNITY

One of the best ways to learn is to have a teachable spirit. We might tend to think that our point of view is more valid than others and allow self-righteousness to set in. Take your point of view, share it with your peers and spiritual family, and allow feedback from them.

Being in the company of godly men and women who can act as your spiritual mentors can also give you the knowledge, wisdom and understanding to speak up about issues that are close to God’s heart.

“Where there is no counsel, the people fall; But in the multitude of counselors there is safety.” (Proverbs 11:14 NKJV)

SPEAK ABOUT IT

As young people, we often think that our voice is not able to make an impact, as we feel that we’re too inexperienced or insignificant in the decision-making process. However, this isn’t true.

As a young person, we represent the voice of our generation and we have the chance to stand for kingdom values. We should not allow the spirit of fear and unworthiness to take away opportunities to represent Christ in society.

God has always opened the doors for me to share my thoughts with people in authority. And their response has been: “I didn’t know young people think in this way as the media always reports that the youth are more liberal or are fighting for more freedom in policies.”

“I will speak of Your testimonies also before kings, And will not be ashamed.” (Psalm 119:46 NKJV)

God has raised us up to speak to kings and queens. If we do not speak up, the voices that flood culture will come from somewhere else.

“For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14)

THINK & TALK
  1. What are 1-2 issues that you feel more deeply for?
  2. What does the Bible have to say about them?
  3. How can you share your views with others in winsome ways?
